A Simple Hand Care Routine (For Very Dry, Cracked Hands)

I've long suffered with really dry, cracked hands, that become painful if I don't show them some weekly maintenance. I've been doing this routine for over a year now, at least once a week to twice a week and it has significantly improved the overall health, look and feel of my hands. It's only five steps, using mostly items you probably already own, and is affordable to maintain. So if you've been searching for routine to keep your hands happy and healthy, keep reading.

Cleanse

Just like your face or body, you want to start this routine on clean skin. I always try to use a hydrating or moisturising hand wash, as I wash my hands more frequently then most, and that just irritates my already dry hands. It doesn't have to be a fancy hand soap, but one with ingredients such as oat, milk, almond, honey or similar is usually pretty good. Make sure to clean them thoroughly, but gently.

Exfoliate

Exfoliating is going to get rid of the rough and peeling skin, leaving your hands silky smooth. You don't have to buy a specific exfoliator for this, just use the same one you use on your body or face. Make sure you exfoliate for at least a minute, including between your fingers, your cuticles and palms.

Hand Mask

I don't have a set hand mask I love. I do however, try and get ones that are specifically designed for dry hands, or hydration. As such, I bought a bundle of the Aveeno: Skin Relief Repairing Hand Masks off Amazon, and they work really well. Whilst your wearing them, rub your hands together every so often, so the cream is being lathered and absorbed into the skin. Don't rush this step, the longer they are on, the better the product will absorb. You might get a case of wrinkly fingertips, but that is preferable over painfully cracked skin.

Hand Cream

When it comes to my hand cream, I don't play around. I've tried so many, and as much as Iā€™d love an aesthetically pleasing and great smelling lotion, they just don't last long enough or work well enough for me to justify spending money on them. However, the O'Keeffe's: Working Hands Hand Cream for Extremely Dry, Cracked Hands is a god send. This stuff is designed for people who use their hands frequently - think builders, kitchen staff - and its been my go to hand cream for a few years now. Its a no frills, simple, safe bet for keeping your hands moisturised throughout the day.

Cuticle Oil

Lastly, I use a cuticle oil. Not only does this help lock in all the product and moisture before it, but oil itself is great for hydration. I start with my cuticles then rub the remainder all over my hands till they feel completely covered. Try to wait as long as possible before washing your hands again, giving as much time as you can for the oil to sink it. But once your done, you should be left with soft, healthy hands, that only need a hand cream throughout the week.
